In a era, where limited jobs and strained resources prevail. It is really an amazing thing to see and be able to recognize that there is still somewhere that, If one really what's to, can actually get off of the street and slowly attempt to get thier life back together again, It is often not easy to do, But It is really possible! Depending on the amount of shear determination and a healthy will to succeed, I myself have witnessed many such successfully restored individuals, that were considered perviously "(so called basket cases) now please don't misunderstand there are the ones for one reason or another will fail through or even come back to start over again, The thing to look at is this..they can, " if they desire to. Good staff support and excellent programs offered. Program members looking to make a positive change are given in-depth biblical coursework, financial coursework, a general education refresher through Butler and employment skills training. If you put in effort case managers will do anything they can to help you out. The food is good as well, despite ubiquitous complaints. C'mon it's free! One issue with the menu is that from time to time expired food and beverages are mixed in with the meal-- expired products being served is not acceptable even at a shelter! :( So kitchen can work on screening for bad food products especially if it's dairy. Wish overnighters were in another facility as they tend to bring in drugs, alcohol, and negative attitudes. Staff does an excellent job handling issues despite these problems and the URM is constructing a new facility for overnighters so program members wont have to worry about being around them. It goes both ways you have some favorites and then your faced with the university of people who just don't want to change or make their lives better off their life for oneself so they can possibly turn around and plus be able to lead a nice person who is in need of hand-to-hand for help remembering all those nice people who turned the cheek on whomever needed some serious influence if they have a ounce of Mustard Seed of faith in them they could just simply p a s s on a blessing to the next Person who needs it you never know who the creator is he could be right here, any forum shape or fashion a fashion asking for help it would be easier than just you just being devoted to at least trying to help out one another...this world is all messed 🆙 with everybody just try to forget to lift 🆙 the next human being with anything that'll get them back on the righteous path of the famous rules Love,Peace of mine and respectful suggestion giving positive gesture to help out that's all I got to say.. URM. Its no way as bad as past comments have described. They do have somewhat oddball rules. But they have good reasons for these rules. Theft is an everyday event. So rules do apply. The food is very good. Ive never seen anyone turn down a meal. The staff can be very tough but they have to be. Some residents can be trouble makers and the staff have to deal with this on a daily bases. When you first check in, they give 90 days of free meals and a bed. I'm very appreciative for this org. They're very big on some occasionally unusual rules, and some staff can be surly (but many are great). Expect to be searched and possibly breathalyzed on entry. One hour of chapel sermon attendance is mandatory. Bunk beds are comfortable and atmosphere usually calm. I have just read through all the reviews in regards to the Union Rescue mission and their have been several changes. Chapel is not mandatory any longer and it's 30 days in 30 days out now for over nighters. So keep in mind when reading these reviews that as with any communal transitioning center things change. They have really upped their game out at the Union rescue mission. More programs, with transportation provided for job interviews and once you get a job they will take you and pick you up if you're in the work program. Also they now have a better TB screening system that is all done in house, (much better than last year). They have a medical program that is the Respite Care program with an amazing on site nurse, Julie is great. Also the New beginnings program (faith based and Christ centered) is still available. You must stop smoking cigarettes in New Beginnings. It's a good thing and requires a firm commitment. It is what you make it. I was ostracized by my family due to addiction. This place gave me more than enough food, a place to sleep, and helped me to get closer to god by offering chapel 7 days a week. Con's... Watch your stuff, people will steal just about anything, but that's almost anywhere and some of the staff are rude just for the sport of it. You can tell burn out among staff is a real and big thing there. Overall I give this place 4 stars because of what it is trying to do, and actually doing, plus the staff that actually matter, are very respectable. It is what you make it. Its cool if you really need help. They try to keep it clean and they feed you good. They have many services that can help you out. Staff, for the most part are cool... To condense eight years into a few paragraphs, I'll share that I last stayed at the Union Rescue Mission in Wichita in 2021... Now that I consistently take medication for good mental health, I am certain that my fourth stint at URM will be my last... In 2017 I stayed 87 days... They provide a safe, warm place to stay with a meal, shower, and, at the time, church service... How anybody could complain is beyond me... Then, I got in trouble in 2018 and needed a 27 day stay... Whenever I am not taking medication, I find it difficult to hold down a job... Again, a meal, shower, laundry service, mat, pillow, a sheet & blanket, and clean environment is a huge blessing... In 2020, I stayed 13 days before giving life a shot in Oklahoma & Missouri... Life sucked. By the way, the Union Rescue Mission in Kansas City is a completely different experience. Those people try to control you with humiliation & shame. Never stay in Kansas City. Those people are awful. Finally, in 2021, I figured out life.
