Specialties: At Hotel Portsmouth, experience small-town New England from the cozy charm of our lovingly updated Victorian-era mansion. Soak up history that goes back to before America was a free country as you wander tree-shaded streets lined with stylish and inviting shops, restaurants, and galleries, or stroll along the shore and watch the marine traffic coming and going in Portsmouth’s bustling waterfront. Established in 2014. The original house at Portsmouth's 40 Court Street was owned by the family of Lucy Marsh. She and her husband John E. Sise purchased the property and demolished it to build their own dream home, a Stick Style mansion, in 1881. It was passed down to Lucy and John's daughter and her husband Alfred Gooding, the antiquarian minister of the South Church (who doubled the size of the original house). It was expanded again in 1985 and opened as the Sise Inn. Today the mansion has been preserved as a classic example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture and one of Portsmouth's grand old homes.
An elaborate, historically sensitive renovation of the property was completed in 2014 prior to its re-opening as The Hotel Portsmouth. In early 2024, the handsome design was again refreshed with eco-conscious materials, curated art, and re-purposed antiques creating a layered testament to both Portsmouth’s history and its modern character, close to everything Portsmouth in historic Haymarket Square.
