These peaceful spots in the Garden lend themselves to meditation and contemplation. The 12 acre Japanese garden is composed of eight distinct garden spaces and a Cultural Village with classrooms, galleries, and the Umami Cafe.
The Portland Japanese Garden offers events, workshops, and cultural holiday celebrations. The Garden is host to more than 350,000 visitors a year who come to experience this peaceful setting of spectacular beauty.
The Portland Japanese Garden is a private 501(c)(3) charitable, not-for-profit organization that receives essential funding from gate admissions, retail sales, and the tax-deductible contributions of its members and donors. The Garden's land, which is located in Washington Park near the International Rose Test Gardens, is leased from the City of Portland. Established in 1963. "A Japanese Garden is not only a place for the cultivation of trees and flowering shrubs, but one that provides secluded leisure, rest, repose, meditation, and sentimental pleasure...The Garden speaks to all the senses, not just to the mind alone."
-- Professor Takuma Tono, Designer of the Portland Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden Society of Oregon was formed in 1963 by Portland citizens interested in promoting a more intimate relationship between the people of Japan and our city and state.
In spring of 2017 the Garden opened it's Cultural Crossing expansion. The Garden's first major expansion since its establishment, Cultural Crossing added new Garden spaces and a Cultural Village to the site.
Today the Portland Japanese Garden offers events, workshops, and cultural celebrations to the more than 350,000 people who visit each year.
