Specialties: The Newport Art Museum is the only museum focusing solely on the artists - past and present - who have lived and worked in the Rhode Island region, celebrating their importance in American art. Our permanent collection includes works by Gilbert Stuart, William Trost Richards, Fitz Henry Lane, and Dale Chihuly. Our rotating exhibitions change three times/year - the schedule and a description of the current exhibitions can be found on our website. In addition, we have a full complement of art history talks, talks by visiting artists, concerts, and theatre performances throughout the year. Please visit the "events" page of our website for details. Established in 1912. The Newport Art Museum and Art Association is one of the oldest continuously operating organizations of its kind in the USA. In the summer of 1912, a group of creative and curious people led by Maud Howe Elliott, Boston-born activist and Pulitzer-Prize-winning author, formed the Art Association of Newport for the purpose of promoting and exhibiting fine arts and fostering arts education within the community. Barely a month after its creation, the Association staged its first exhibition. Next came lectures, social events, and an art school. The Art Association became a museum of art in 1980 and is now one of only 5% of American cultural organizations to be fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.
