Specialties: Dive deep into the Science of Sharks with the newest exhibit at the New England Aquarium. Get up close to some small but mighty shark species from around the world. Hands-on activities illuminate the remarkable adaptations that give them an edge in the water, while the shark and ray touch tank lets you see -- and feel! -- these adaptations in action. Shark science comes alive with inspiring videos featuring our researchers and their efforts to help sharks, and dazzling underwater footage featuring National Geographic photographer Brian Skerry transports you to stunning shark habitats. The New England Aquarium is the place to find out why these magnificent ocean predators are even more incredibly cool than you thought.
Watch nearly 90 penguins streak through the water of the penguin exhibit. Go eye-to-eye with graceful sea turtles as they soar among stingrays, eels, and schools of tropical fish in the four-story Giant Ocean Tank. Step outside to marvel at energetic fur seals and sea lions romping in the open-air New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center overlooking Boston Harbor.
With more than 70 exhibits, the Aquarium is a must-see destination for families, animal lovers, and adventurers alike.
Be sure to save time for a super-sized adventure at the Simons IMAX® Theatre and a New England Aquarium Whale Watch, which leaves from the Aquarium's dock and takes passengers to see whales feasting in Cape Cod Bay. Established in 1969. On June 20, 1969, the New England Aquarium we know today opened its doors to the public. The Aquarium was designed with the intention of providing an underwater experience for visitors as well as a cultural institution that would connect Boston to its waterfront. In its almost four decades of existence, the Aquarium has grown in size and evolved in concept.
Extensive programs were developed to help preserve marine life and bring about a better understanding of it. Notable innovations were the Giant Ocean Tank, opened in 1970--at the time, the largest circular salt water tank in the world--and the Simons IMAX® Theatre, still New England's largest screen, which opened in December of 2001.
Today, the Aquarium is one of Boston's premier visitor attractions and a major resource for public education. Beyond its exhibit halls, the Aquarium is also a leader in global marine conservation, with scientists working around the globe.
