Specialties: Our American Imagist Collection focuses on artworks from the "Golden Age of American Illustration." During those years, illustration art culturally and socially defined the times with images and it set the styles, attitudes and goals for our country.
The NMAI features original art created by beloved illustrators such as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, J. C. Leyendecker, N. C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Jessie Willcox Smith, and over 75 other illustrators. Illustration is now recognized as "the most American of American art."
The National Museum of American Illustration is displayed in the majestic 19th century architectural masterpiece Vernon Court, located in beautiful Newport, RI. Established in 2000. Founded by Laurence S. Cutler and Judy Goffman Cutler, the National Museum of American Illustration opened Vernon Court's gates to the public in 2000.
Vernon Court was constructed in 1898 for a wealthy widow, Anna Van Nest Gambrill, to be used as a summer home. It was designed by the architecture firm Carrère & Hastings, who are most well known for the New York Public Library.
The property stayed in the Gambrill family until the early 1950s when they sold the property to the founders of the Hatch School. In 1960, they relocated and when they moved out, Vernon Court Girls College, an all-girls two year school, moved in.
That school went bankrupt in 1974, and the property passed through a number of different owners until 1998, when it was acquired by the Museum's founders, Laurence and Judy Cutler. Presently it houses the American Imagist Collection of Golden Age American Illustrators such as Rockwell, Parrish, and Leyendecker.
