Specialties: Founded in 1822, the Maine Historical Society is comprised of the Museum & Store, historic Wadsworth-Longfellow House & Garden, Brown research library, and the Maine Memory Network online. We are located in the heart of Portland's downtown cultural district. We believe an understanding of the past is vital to a healthy and progressive society, and we strive to make history accessible and enjoyable to all. Established in 1786. Built between 1785-1786, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House is the only single-family residence to survive downtown Congress Street's change from a mixed commercial and residential neighborhood on the edge of town to an urban business district, it is the oldest standing structure on the Portland peninsula.
The House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, and administratively added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
Maine Historical Society opened the house to the public in 1901, making it the first historic house museum in Maine. One of Maine's oldest treasures, the house is a National Historic Landmark.
