The Ranch is a member of the National and Montana Dude Ranchers' Associations, is an ORVIS Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was voted #1 Nordic Ski Resort in North America. Established in 1915. Homesteaded by Clarence Lytle in 1915 as a working ranch, Lytle sold the Ranch in 1926 to Chicago papermill tycoon, J. Fred Butler, who developed it into a family vacation ranch. After the Butlers and Kilbournes (daughter and son-in-law) sold the Ranch in 1946, Lone Mountain lived many lives; it was a boy's camp instilling values into young men, a guest ranch becoming the first place in Montana with underground electricity, a logging operation with families and schoolhouses, a hunting and fishing camp, a guest ranch again and in the early 1970's, newscaster Chet Huntley and several large corporations purchased the Ranch to be the headquarters for the development of Big Sky Resort. In 1977, Bob and Vivian Schapp gave the Ranch the great gift of continuity and personal investment building it into the #1 Nordic Ski Resort in the Country and an Orvis Lodge of the Year. Through all of its lives, the Ranch and its crew have always anticipated guests' needs and over-delivered on expectations.
