In 1975, our founder had a vision -- to replicate as nearly as possible in the United States the hut-to-hut hiking he had enjoyed in Europe. Beginning as a cooperative endeavor among six Vermont country inns, "Country Inns Along the Trail" quickly proved popular and became an independent enterprise.
The first tours were self-guided hiking using Vermont's Long Trail. A key feature has always been the tailor-made aspect: there is no calendar set in advance that you have to work around, and no group to either keep pace with or hold you back. You are independent during the day with excellent maps (and for cyclists, turn-by-turn cue sheets). This enables our guests to experience Vermont up close and at the best pace -- your own.
The Inn to Inn format lends itself to many interests: biking is now our largest program. Winter trips have expanded from backcountry skiing to include snowshoeing and touring center skiing. We look forward to greeting you in Vermont soon.
