Specialties: A proud member of Historic Hotels of America, the Hawthorne offers 89 guest rooms, two dining outlets, a Grand Ballroom and smaller function rooms, plus personalized service all in a central location.
Adjacent to Salem Common (the birthplace of the National Guard), the hotel is just steps from the Salem Witch Museum, the renowned Peabody Essex Museum, and Derby Wharf. With free on-site parking, guests and visitors enjoy using the Hawthorne as their base for exploring the many shops, attractions and neighborhoods in Salem. Others choose the Hawthorne for off-site meetings, weddings, bridal showers or holiday parties.
With a casual pub and a 1920's-inspired dining room located off the lobby of the hotel, guests can enjoy a relaxing cocktail, savor creative entrees, or just take in the historic ambiance.
Being a historic hotel built in 1925, each guest room is unique - and a bit quirky - and all have been freshly updated. The hotel lobby and grand ballroom were also renovated in early 2020. Established in 1925. The Hawthorne Hotel, named for the Salem-born author of "The Scarlet Letter," Nathaniel Hawthorne, opened in 1925 after being built as a "modern hotel for the business traveler." The hotel has grown into a local landmark hosting travelers from all over the world, brides and grooms, families and friends, local non-profits and Hollywood celebrities.
The Hotel gained its most notoriety in 1970 when the TV sitcom "Bewitched" filmed the "Salem Saga." Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick Sargent stayed at the hotel and to do this day guests re-create the iconic "elevator scene" in our lobby.
The city of Salem began hosting an annual Haunted Happenings festival in 1982, which quickly exploded into a month-long Halloween celebration. The Hawthorne joined in and has been hosting a sold-out costume ball every October since 1991.
The Hawthorne Hotel received the prestigious "2015 Best City Center Historic Hotel Award" from Historic Hotels of America, showcasing the hotel's commitment to excellence.
