Specialties: Clifton Observatory is located atop the hill overlooking the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Visitors are invited to indulge in a variety of locally sourced menu items, including cake, coffee, pastries, and a rotating seasonal menu of artisanal sandwiches. Enjoy refreshments at a cosy table inside, on the patio overlooking the downs, or on our spectacular rooftop terrace which boasts the best views in the city. With two unique visitor attractions including the legendary Giant's Cave and a working Camera Obscura from the Victorian Era, Clifton Observatory is a fascinating spot to visit.
The Clifton Observatory can also be hired for parties, corporate events, and weddings. Hire includes exclusive access to the stunning rooftop terrace with truly breath-taking views. Established in 1766. An iconic piece of English heritage and important Bristol landmark, the Clifton Observatory is a must-see attraction for tourists and local residents of all ages. The site was home to a Celtic tribe known as the Dobunni in the Iron age. In 1766, a snuff mill was constructed atop the hill overlooking the Avon Gorge. The mill was partially destroyed by a storm and left derelict for around 50 years.
In 1828, artist and engineer William West leased the old mill and transformed it into an Observatory. he installed a number of telescopes, including the Camera Obscura which can still be visited today.
Now, the site is a tourist attraction featuring a small museum, access to the Camera Obscura, and access to the incredible Giant's Cave, a unique experience with a steep staircase carved through the rocks to a viewpoint in the side of the cliff-face. (Though please note children of under four and dogs are not permitted in the Giant's Cave due to safety concerns.)
