Specialties: Our museum provides detailed information on the establishment of the historic Town of Atlantic Beach, S.C., and displays modern and contemporary art works by some of the most prominent African Dispora artists from the Harlem Renaissance to present day. Atlantic Beach known as "The Black Pearl" is a strip of primarily black-owned coastal property in Horry County. Historically, African-Americans went there because they could not use the same beaches as whites in South Carolina. Our art museum contains works by some of the most prolific African Diaspora artists of the past two centuries. Currently on display are works by Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Lois Mailou Jones, Faith Ringgold, John Biggers, Kwesi Botchway, Beauford Delaney, Chakaia Booker, Richard Hunt, Merton Simpson, and Stephen Towns. Established in 2024. We started collecting art by artists of the African Diaspora nearly 20 years ago while serving in, and in support of the U.S. Army. While serving at Balad Air Base, Iraq we came across an article titled "African American Masters", which displayed works by artists such as Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Richard Mayhew, and Charles White. After some additional research we found that a number of the artists had previously served in the U.S. military and that was the spark that ignited our interest in collecting art. Shortly after returning home we decided to purchase property in Atlantic Beach, SC, a place that my wife visited frequently as a child. Over the years our collection continued to grow until finally we'd run out of wall space to display the art. The logical solution for us was to establish this museum in the "Black Pearl" and share our collection with the public.
