The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire and encourage all artists. Reaching out, the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery provides art education and exposure to visual, performing and literary arts for the benefit of the broadest possible audience. Established in 1982. The history of the Carbon County Arts Guild has been suspenseful and dramatic. After it's founding in 1973 by a group of ardent, enlightened citizens, it operated from the Carbon County Courthouse annex building for 5 years, acquiring pottery and darkroom equipment, mirrors for dance, and substantial bank account (through fundraisers) for a future building of it's own; holding classes; and bringing the Missoula Children's Theater and Shakespeare in the Parks to Red Lodge. The Guild was a genuine, enthusiastic force in the community.
Then the breakthrough!! In 1982, after months of strenuous effort, the Burlington Northern Railroad donated the old depot to the Guild with a lease on the land. With sewer/water problems solved, the Guild moved in, Sept. 1, 1983.
A proposal to the 1983 State Legislature for $40,000 to remodel the depot and landscape the site, produced $20,000. This, plus the Guild's Building Fund, was used to begin a renaissance of the historic landmark into a foc
