Specialties: Cape Cod Healthcare is the leading provider of healthcare services for residents and visitors of Cape Cod. With more than 450 physicians, 4,700 employees and 1,100 volunteers, Cape Cod Healthcare (CCHC) has two acute care hospitals, the Cape's leading provider of homecare and hospice services (VNA), a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility (JML Care Center), an assisted living facility (Heritage at Falmouth), the Cape's only local laboratory service (CCHC Laboratory Services) and numerous health programs. Established in 1916. On Oct. 3, 1920, an article in the Boston Daily Globe proudly announced "Hospital for all Cape Cod opens tomorrow at Hyannis." Before the advent of a local hospital, injured fishermen and women facing difficult pregnancies had to travel by train to Boston hospitals. There was also the fear that a return of the influenza epidemic might strike. In part due to these concerns, the Visiting Nurse Association of
Cape Cod formed in 1916 to establish a single nurse in Falmouth.
Charles Ayling, a local businessman was instrumental in having the vision for a Cape hospital. Ayling saw clearly that Cape Cod needed its own hospital. Later, Ayling donated the money needed to build a new wing that still bears his name. He also served as president of the hospital's corporation for eleven years until he stepped down in 1942. Thanks to Ayling , the Hyannis Board of Trade which set up a
committee in which all parts of the Cape were represented.
