Job Overview

Assists with the operations of all facets of the animal shelter, caring for stray and abandoned animals and serving the public in regard to animal shelter services. Performs data entry pertaining to animals handled. Works with volunteers and Code Enforcement officers.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assists the general public with questions concerning animals, adoptions, licensing and other related shelter information.
  • Answers telephone to provide information to callers or refer them to appropriate source for information; use of police radio for communication with Code Enforcement officers.
  • Makes arrangements, appointments and host shelter tours.
  • Assists in the daily operation of the animal shelter including care and handling of animals with feeding, watering, walking, monitoring health, adoptions, and reclaims.
  • Thoroughly cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, and animal shelter; conducts initial health examinations on incoming animals; administers medication to animals as prescribed by animal control officers or veterinarian.
  • Performs daily computer data entry, generates reports, keeps accurate records on all cash, receipts, and disbursements.
  • Maintains logs for "pet wish list" and lost and found pets.
  • Maintains inventory of shelter supplies and equipment.
  • Apply knowledge and skills in controlling/handling individual animal temperament. Have ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, grooming and/or treatment.
  • Perform all related work as required.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six months training and experience in the care of animals, or experience in a similar position.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

  • Valid Michigan Driver License

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Excellent computer skills required
  • Excellent oral and written skills are essential
  • Must be motivated and work independently
  • Must have a genuine liking for animals and concern for their welfare and enjoy interacting with the public

Physical Requirements

Physical Demands: Ability to lift and/or move 40 plus pounds frequently, over 75 pounds occasionally. Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Able to perform relatively strenuous physical activities. Environment includes exposure to outside elements, with walking in inclement weather. Able to withstand contact with a variety of cleaning agents including bleach, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate with employees and the public.

Visual: The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. The important aspects of vision are:

  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
  • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.
  • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

Work Environment: Subject to many interruptions due to multiple calls and inquiries. Able to work with upset citizens and vicious animals. Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required. Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises. Exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes. Possible exposure to contagious diseases.
