Homes for Children: Night Supervisor *Internal Only* Description Incumbent serves as Night Supervisor for the Vigo County Homes for Children, responsible for maintaining welfare of residents and premises of Group Home during the night.

Example of Duties

  • Monitors and maintains youth in facility and surrounding premises, including staying awake and alert during night shift, maintaining safe and secure environment for residents and staff.
  • Conducts checks on residents regularly, and checks all doors and windows for security.
  • Instruct and advise residents as needed. Intervene in disputes.
  • Administer medicines as directed.
  • Wake students in the morning; transports students to school if needed.
  • Maintain resident checklists and a record on incidents.
  • Reviews individual treatment plans, and provides crisis management for youth.
  • Processes and/or receives emergency shelter youth.
  • Informs house parent of any problems.
  • Performs other related essential duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, with previous relevant work experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age,
  • Ability to complete all required certifications and training programs, such as CPR/First Aid.
  • Ability to meet all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices for supervising and engaging youth in residential group home settings.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comprehend and use a variety of informational documents and reference books and manuals, including timesheets, incident logs, policy manual and first aid manual.
  • knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to accurately complete required reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, residents, sales representatives, contractors, State inspectors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially violent individuals and deescalate volatile situations by means of conversation/negotiation.
  • Ability to provide public access to and or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions, and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences in data, analyze and evaluate data, and make determinations based on data analysis.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, occasionally under time pressure.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and occasionally plan and layout assigned work projects.
  • Ability to work extended, weekends, and/or evening hours and occasionally travel out of town for training, but not overnight.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
Supplemental Information Physical and yearly TB screenings required. Drug and alcohol screening required. Criminal background check required. All tests and screenings must be passed and are a condition of employment.

Incumbent maintains communication with co-workers, other County departments, residents, sales representatives, contractors, State inspectors, and the public for purposes of exchanging and explaining information and coordinating client services and activities. Incumbents work may occasionally involve non-routine problem solving to gain cooperation of potentially violent residents in situations that may jeopardize the safety of incumbent or others.

Incumbent reports directly to the Executive Director.

Incumbent performs duties in a youth residential group home, involving normal hazards associated with at-risk adolescents, such as verbal abuse, communicable diseases and potentially violent/hostile individuals. Incumbent duties involve sitting/walking at will, sitting for long periods, crouching/kneeling, driving, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent works extended, weekends, and/or evening hours and occasionally travels out of town for training, but not overnight. Vigo County is an Equal opportunity Employer.
