The Village of Tinley Park (population approximately 56,000) seeks qualified applicants to fill the part-time position of Community Service Officer (CSO) – Field Operations, a non-sworn position, responsible for providing general support to the Police Department and service to Village residents through community policing.

Key Responsibilities

The CSO-Field Operations position will be responsible for community policing responsibilities enforcing Village ordinances and performing other duties that do not require physical arrest and/or do not relate to crime in progress. This position will patrol the Village utilizing a motorized vehicle and observe vehicles and pedestrians reporting suspicious circumstances or other situations requiring police intervention. Will identify traffic hazards and either mitigate them or notify proper authority, remove illegal signs placed throughout the Village, and enforce municipal ordinances relating to non-criminal complaints. This position will also give information and provide assistance to the public, write and issue non-traffic citations, attend court as required, and prepare reports on assigned incidents using desktop computers or mobile data terminals. Will also provide a variety of specialized services including motorist assistance, assisting crossing guards at school crossings, traffic control and direction (including Hollywood Casino Amphitheater). vacation house watch services and security checks, police department station tours, and fingerprinting individuals for non-criminal purposes. Will also assist with the police fleet of vehicles transporting police vehicles to Public Works or other service providers for cleaning, maintenance, and repair.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

High school diploma or GED is required and at least one (1) year of prior related experience in work involving public contact is required. Prior public safety experience is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public.

Must successfully complete LEADS certification within six (6) months of hire, in addition all other in-house training as directed.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with public safety, have an interest in serving the community, and be dedicated to supporting the operations of the police department in a non-sworn position. They must be able to safely operate Village vehicles in all weather conditions, work under stressful situations involving public contact, and work effectively independently with little supervision or as a team member and within the guidelines of standard operating procedures, department rules and regulations, and within the scope of authority for the position.

Additional Information

Great opportunity for law enforcement students looking to gain valuable experience. Must be available to work a consistent part-time schedule, generally 30-34 hours per week. Availability needed Monday - Saturday. Position will generally be scheduled afternoon shift from 12:00pm to 8:00pm or 2:00pm to 10:00pm, can be flexible with scheduling. Availability outside standard shift is also needed to support emergency and/or other community events.
