Communications/Marketing Internship - Fall 2024 General Description

This role requires someone who is creative, enjoys challenges and is a natural communicator. The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) is seeking a driven intern with a passion for writing, editing and media relations. A DZS communications intern will directly support the organization’s mission of creating meaningful connections between people, animals and the natural world so all can thrive through content creation and outreach.

The internship requires 16 hours (two days) per week. This is a non-paid position for students who receive course credit.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Brainstorm campaign ideas
  • Assist with marketing initiatives
  • Pitch stories to local media
  • Edit content following AP Style
  • Learn how to apply analytics and media insights to inform external communications
  • Write blogs that engage our audience and spread awareness of the DZS mission
  • Escort media and other guests as needed
  • Attend special events as needed to gather photo and video content to be used in external promotions
  • Work directly with cross-functional teams to develop and execute external content
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Current enrollment as a college junior or senior majoring in marketing, communications, public relations or related field
  • Experience with social media platforms

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills
  • Strong news judgement and editing skills
  • Familiarity with AP Style preferred
  • Ability to handle and prioritize simultaneous projects and meet deadlines
  • Driven and resourceful, adept at working autonomously
Working Conditions

Regular work schedules may include weekends, occasional evenings or early mornings. The work environment is predominantly indoors, but may require work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for special events, tours, openings, etc.

Physical Requirements

Requires moderate physical effort such as walking, bending, stooping and standing for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and move 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
