Position Summary:
The Department of American Sign Language & Interpreting Studies at the University of Northern Colorado is actively searching to fill a contract renewable assistant professor & program coordinator position. Colorado ranks high in the nation in outdoor pursuits, innovation, and "future livability" and has the second-highest percentage of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree. The ASLIS Department has a long history of outstanding online education. Programming includes an MA in Teaching ASL, an MA in Teaching ASL with World Language Licensure K-12, a CCIE-accredited BA in ASL English Interpreting, an ASL minor, and Liberal Arts Curriculum coursework in ASL. The BA and ASL Minor is offered online and on the main campus in Greeley, with a residential summer session for all, and the Teaching ASL MA degree is offered online with a summer residential session on the main campus in Greeley. Job Duties:
Coordinate the online Teaching ASL MA program; contribute to the on-campus and online ASL program, including the ASL Minor and ASL coursework; recruit/support teaching staff; oversee/contribute to the development/delivery of courses/programs; advise students; identify and supervise field placements; evaluate student outcomes (knowledge and skills); conduct program evaluations; work with community members and leaders (Deaf community, state, regional, national and professional agencies); conduct research; participate in national, state, College, and University-wide professional activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
This
full-time position requires an earned doctorate in linguistics, Deaf Studies, education,
foreign language instruction, or an appropriately related field. A minimum of
three years of relevant teaching experience is required. Preference will be
given to applicants who have (a) certification by the American Sign Language
Teachers Association; (b) experience teaching college-level American Sign
Language (ASL) courses via face-to-face and distance methodologies; (c) experience
working with students from diverse cultures; (d) a proven track record of
successful teamwork; and (d) evidence of scholarship, or national and state
leadership, and/or grant activity.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior
program administration experience, including recruitment and retention of
students, is desired. Excellent communication skills (e.g., ASL and English)
and strong interpersonal skills are critical for this position, as
collaboration across the University, local communities, the state, and the
nation is a vital component of the work. Experience or willingness to become
proficient in grant writing and administration is helpful. Finally, a
sophisticated knowledge of technology applications in educational programs will
be necessary.
