Position Type: Transportation/Mechanic Date Posted: 1/5/2026 Location: Transportation Building Title: Mechanic Work Unit/Location: Transportation Reports to: Shop Foreman Contract Length: 12 months Pay Schedule: Transportation Overtime Status: Non-exempt Hours: 8 hours/day Union Status: NEA Licensure: Preferred: CDL Class B with P and S endorsements and ASE Certification Note: All positions with Santa Fe Public Schools require a post-offer/pre-employment background check. Some positions have additional requirements as established by federal or state rules and regulations. General Function: The Mechanic will maintain district vehicles, diagnose malfunctions, and perform repairs in a satisfactory manner that will meet or exceed established standards for safe and reliable vehicle operation according to relevant legislation, regulations, and standards. Education/Training/Experience: Minimum: High school graduate or equivalent education, training and experience applicable to diesel bus or truck maintenance and repair. Must be twenty-one years of age. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver License Class "B" (with a "P" and "S" endorsements) and adhere to requirements as outlined in #6.41.4 NMAC. Preferred: ASE certification. Five (5) years' experience as a certified general line mechanic or two (2) years as a school bus mechanic, heavy equipment, diesel and/or gas engine machine mechanic. Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: Must be able to read mechanic manuals and vehicle parts instructions. Must be able to operate a diagnostic machine. Must be able to operate a tire balancing machine. Must be able to operate a brake drum grinding machine. Must be able to break apart and repair large and small tires and wheels. Ability to use good judgment and to demonstrate good decision-making skills. Diagnostic, electrical, hydraulic, air brake and AC skills are a must. Must have the ability to perform minor cutting and welding repairs. Must be a self-starter, have the ability to multi-task and move from one job to the next with minimum delay time. Must be willing to attend inservice trainings and department meetings. Essential Job Functions: All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following: • Perform thorough, accurate preventative maintenance inspections. • Follow district required schedules and complete all required maintenance operations including • lubrications, fluid changes, brake adjustment, cooling, drivetrains, suspensions, power steering units, clutches, transmissions, temperature, gas regulating components, and tire rotation. • Perform unscheduled maintenance as needed and as directed by supervisor. Job Description - Mechanic Page 2 • Perform complex operations including engine, electrical, fuel, brake and exhaust repairs and field tests. • Test drives vehicles to ensure repair(s) resolved the problem. • Identify and report any additional maintenance and/or repairs found necessary in conducting assigned repairs and maintenance. • Perform emergency roadside services as needed. • Document repairs and parts on work orders completely and accurately using computers. • Maintain tools and workplace so that shop conditions are neat and orderly. • Assist Bus Drivers/Assistants on routes and serve as backup to ensure the safe delivery of students to and from appropriate school sites and destinations. • Must attend trainings provided to upgrade and maintain skills. • Other duties as assigned. Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): Automotive computers and GPS systems, shop manuals and equipment, shop air equipment, vehicle diagnostic machines, gasoline, solvents, paint thinners and soap solutions. Physical/Cognitive Requirements: Visual acuity is required in order to read manuals, instructions, and data output from diagnostic machinery in order to inspect, monitor and check out vehicles for safety and reliability. The minimum amount of weight to be lifted is 70 lbs., although may be routinely required to lift up to 100-150 lbs. Environmental Conditions: Most of the work is performed in an indoor shop setting; however, mechanics must also work outdoors when repairing disabled vehicles in all types of weather. Routine exposure to gasoline, diesel and paint fumes may be encountered. Salary Range: $29,848 - $31,000+ Personal Accountability: • Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality. • Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness. • Begins and completes work within the allotted time. • Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment. • Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/ special application. • Protects the district's resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment. • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
